The new McAfee Labs 2019 Threats Predictions Report is just out….it is a well-written document and a great way to lose a bit more sleep!

The threat actors across the globe continue to grow in power, knowledge and sophistication. The major players are nation states and cyber criminals.  The stakes are high. The just released McAfee Labs 2019 Threats Predictions Report sharpens the crystal ball for the next 12 months.  McAfee reports seeing greater collaboration among cybercriminals exploiting the underground market, which has allowed them to develop efficiencies in their products. Cybercriminals have partnered in this way for years and in 2019, this market economy will only expand. The forecast includes:

  • Cybercriminal Underground to Consolidate, Create More Partnerships to Boost Threats
  • Artificial Intelligence the Future of Evasion Techniques
  • Synergistic Threats Will Multiply, Requiring Combined Responses
  • Cybercriminals to Use Social Media Misinformation, Extortion Campaigns to Challenge Organizations’ Brands
  • Data Exfiltration Attacks to Target the Cloud
  • Voice-Controlled Digital Assistants the Next Vector in Attacking IoT Devices
  • Cybercriminals to Increase Attacks on Identity Platforms and Edge Devices Under Siege

Raj Samani, the Chief Scientist and McAfee Fellow, summed the threat landscape up very well. “One thing is certain: Our dependency on technology has become ubiquitous. Consider the breaches of identity platforms, with reports of 50 million users being affected. It is no longer the case that a breach is limited to that platform. Everything is connected, and you are only as strong as your weakest link. In the future, we face the question of which of our weakest links will be compromised.”
