The influenza A (H1N1) virus has been detected in two foreign students of the American University of Cairo and 140 students have been placed in quarantine. A 3rd student with a fever has been hospitalized for as a precautionary move.

This new outbreak is particularly unnerving as the H5N1 virus is currently circulating in both human and poultry populations in Egypt, increasing the pathways by which a highly transmissible and high mortality virus could evolve.

Egypt has just reported its 80th human case of H5N1 in a 4-year-old girl from a village in Dakahlia Governorate “Delta.” Of the 80 H5N1 cases, 27 have been fatal.
