Brian Krebs, a security blogger, reported the breach yesterday (Dec 18) and Target confirmed it today (Dec 19). Target reported that online customers were not affected by the breach. The breach appears to have been isolated to the point-of-sale systems in Target’s retail stores. So much for the argument from some who say that shopping online is more dangerous from a security perspective!
Target reported that cybercriminals successfully accessed customer names, credit and/or debit card numbers, expiration dates and three-digit security codes for 40 million customers who had shopped at its stores.
Immediately after discovering the breach, Target alerted federal authorities and financial institutions, and are working with a third party forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation.
