Two suspected jihadists have been killed and a third person has been arrested in an anti-terror operation in Verviers, Belgium. In a press conference, Belgium police stated that the group, who had returned from Syria, were about to launch “large-scale” attacks. No police or members of the public were harmed.
Suspects opened fire as police entered an apartment with a search warrant. The suspects immediately opened fire on the special units of the federal police with military weaponry and assault weapons before they were neutralized. Witnesses in Verviers reported hearing heavy gunfire for several minutes and at least three explosions. Verviers is in the province of Liege, close to the German border, and has a population of about 56,000.
Additional anti-terror raids were also under way in the Brussels region at this moment. Belgium authorities have raised the terror threat level in the country to three – the second highest.
